Spine care

Spine specialists, who can be orthopedists or neurosurgeons, diagnose and treat injuries, trauma and diseases related to the spine. Spine care doctors also offer care for herniated discs, nerve damage, sciatica, neck pain or chronic back pain.

Spine care centers in Florida

Your spine literally carries you through life, playing an important role in almost everything you do.

From something as seemingly simple as sitting upright to running around keeping up with the busyness of life, we can sometimes forget just how foundational our spine really is. So when spine pain or conditions start to bother you, the spine specialists at HCA Florida Physicians — a network of physician practices across the state — are here to help. Our doctors are experts in neurological care and orthopedic care and have years of experience treating conditions of the brain, spine and nerves.

Spine conditions we treat

Our spine specialists treat conditions affecting every part of the spine, including the:

  • Cervical region (upper back and neck)
  • Thoracic region (middle of the back)
  • Lumbar (lower back)

Because of this, our spine teams treat a wide range of conditions, such as:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Bone spurs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • Muscle strains
  • Peripheral nerve disease
  • Pulled muscles
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal cord disorders
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Spinal fractures
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal tumors
  • Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra)
  • Whiplash
  • Worn joints

Diagnosing a spine condition

We use imaging exams to gain a detailed view of the spine, allowing us to diagnose the cause of pain and evaluate the extent of injuries and diseases.

Some tests we offer to visualize the back and spine include:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Myelography
  • X-ray

Spine treatments we offer

Our doctors understand that no two spines are the same. That's why our spine specialists provide individualized treatment from diagnosis through recovery. Regardless of the recommendation for your treatment, we'll work with you to create a plan that works for you and your family. We'll be right by your side throughout the entire process, ready to answer questions and make sure you feel comfortable and secure with your care.

Nonsurgical and minimally invasive back and neck treatment

Oftentimes, back pain can be caused by a sudden movement that will resolve on its own after a few days with rest and/or over-the-counter medication.

If those things do not relieve your pain, our doctors will usually suggest other nonsurgical treatment methods as the first line of defense against a spine condition.

Our nonsurgical and minimally invasive therapies include:

Nerve stimulation procedure

Nerve stimulation is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve pain. During the procedure, your spine specialists will deliver low-voltage electrical currents directly to the site causing pain.

Rehabilitative care

Because the spine is interconnected with so many other muscles and structures, rehabilitative spine care may involve physical therapy to strengthen other muscles that affect the spine. During physical therapy, you will engage in medically supervised fitness plans to regain strength in targeted muscles and take pressure off the spine.

Spinal injections

A spinal injection is a procedure in which medication is delivered directly to the site causing pain. During the procedure, your doctor will use image-guided technology to inject the medication, which is used to reduce pain and inflammation.

Advanced spine surgery

When it comes to spine surgery, our doctors partner with you to ensure that you and your family feel comfortable with your treatment, because we consider you a part of our team.

Typically, our goal is to exhaust as many conservative treatment methods as possible before considering surgery. However, if surgery is needed, our specialists have extensive training and years of experience in performing routine and complex spinal surgeries, such as:

  • Cervical spine surgery
  • Disc replacement surgery
  • Dural repair or other spinal cord repair
  • Herniated disc surgery
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty
  • Lamina procedures
  • Lumbar spine surgery
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Spinal compression fracture repair
  • Spinal discectomy
  • Spinal fusion
  • Spinal internal fixation
  • Spinal nerve block
  • Spinal reconstructive surgery
  • Ulnar nerve decompression

Minimally invasive spine surgery

When possible, our spine surgeons are also experienced in performing minimally invasive spine surgery. During a minimally invasive procedure, our surgeons are able to operate through small incisions — unlike larger incisions used during traditional surgery — using tiny instruments.

Minimally invasive surgery provides many benefits to patients, including a shorter hospital stay and recovery time, reduced scarring and, often, a more effective outcome.

Two of the most advanced types of minimally invasive surgery we offer include:

  • Laser spine surgery — During laser spine surgery, your doctor will use a focused beam of light (laser) to remove soft tissue through a small incision.
  • Robot-assisted spine surgery — During a robot-assisted surgical procedure, your surgeon uses advanced robotic technology. This allows them to have a detailed view of the surgical site and increased precision.

Our spine care specialists

The spine is a complex structure, which means that sometimes, your doctor will need to create equally complex solutions to treat your condition. At HCA Florida Physicians, our spine specialists are prepared to do just that.

Our doctors have years of experience carefully evaluating and crafting care plans to alleviate the source of your pain. Since caring for the spine involves knowledge of both the nerves and bones, you may see one of our orthopedic or neurologic doctors.

Additionally, as part of the HCA Florida Healthcare network, our physicians have access to teams of other specialists, should they need additional resources to help you heal.
