Edward Chung, MD is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon and Fellow of the prestigious Spine Institute of Santa Monica. Recognized for his expertise in advanced spinal care, Dr. Chung combines technical excellence with a patient-centered, conservative treatment philosophy.
Raised in Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Chung earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park, followed by a Master’s degree from Georgetown University. He received his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the world renowned University of Maryland / R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center—one of the nation’s premier trauma training programs. He further specialized through an advanced Spinal Surgery Fellowship at the Spine Institute of Santa Monica at St. John’s Health Center.
Dr. Chung is a published author and recognized authority in innovative surgical techniques. His areas of expertise include minimally invasive spine surgery, motion preservation technologies such as artificial disc replacement, and advanced microsurgical procedures. His comprehensive training enables him to treat the full spectrum of spinal conditions affecting both the cervical and lumbar spine.
Despite his surgical expertise, Dr. Chung is deeply committed to conservative care. He believes many patients can achieve substantial improvement through non-surgical treatment options. As he explains, “Many patients can achieve remarkable results with conservative care. I reserve surgical options for those whose neurological deficits require intervention and where I can make a meaningful impact.”
Dr. Chung’s philosophy is centered entirely on patient care. He is committed to creating a warm, welcoming environment where patients feel comfortable, respected, and heard. By treating each individual as if they were a member of his own family, he delivers care grounded in compassion, trust, and clinical excellence.
As a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, Dr. Chung is highly skilled in both the latest advancements in non-operative treatments and the most advanced surgical techniques and technologies. His comprehensive expertise allows him to individualize treatment plans tailored to each patient’s condition, goals, and lifestyle. Whether recommending conservative care or surgical intervention, his focus remains the same: achieving the best possible outcome with the highest standard of care.
